 About the wine
A lovely, medium bodied and concentrated red wine made of a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, made by Sportoletti from the central region of Umbria. This Asisi Rosso is lovely wine, to be matched with all kinds of dishes. Renownded for its fruity and concentrated characther, which is typical for wines from Umbria.

After vinification the wine ages for several months in large oak casks and and several months in bottle.

Pairs very well with roasted meats, lamb, pasta dishes, risotto and matured cheeses.  Drinktemperature is 16-17° C. Drink until 8 - 10 years after the year of production.

About the producer
Sportoletti’s winery is located near Spello and Assisi, two ancient medieval towns in the region of Umbria in central Italy, about 55 miles north of Rome.

Umbria, the hilliest region in Italy, is an extremely green and pristine area, where nature and history blend together, offering visitors a unique mix of medieval monuments and churches and astonishing natural attractions, like national parks, water falls, and lakes. Winemaking traditions in this region reach back to the Etruscans and Romans, but as in Burgundy, grape growing and winemaking were developed and enriched by the monks during Medieval times.

The Sportoletti family has been in agriculture for generations and has always been dedicated to the production of fine wine in Umbria. At the end of the 1970s, brothers Ernesto and Remo Sportoletti, recognizing the incredible potential of their land and soils to create outstanding wines, decided to turn their attention exclusively to winemaking. Following their father Vittorio’s teachings on high quality productions, they released only 1,000 bottles of their first vintage to the market. After taking this first step, the two brothers began a long journey in search of the perfect balance between innovation and tradition, an endeavor to fully develop the great potential of their territory.

Today, the Sportoletti family owns 50 acres of vineyards and produces four wines, two whites and two reds. Thanks to the impressive success of their wines, the overall production has soared to 200,000 bottles in as few as ten years. Their Merlot, which is worth noting, is produced from old vines planted at Sportoletti more than 50 years ago.

The soil’s richness in conjunction with innovative methods of production, give Sportoletti’s wines their unique identity and make them among the best expressions of Umbria’s winemaking. In 1998, the two Sportoletti brothers decided to hire the highly esteemed and world renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella. This marked the start of a highly successful professional relationship as well as a valued friendship.

Sportoletti also produces a delicious extra virgin olive oil. The estate’s 2,500 olive trees, predominantly of the Moraiolo variety, are cultivated at an altitude of approximately 1,640 feet on the slopes of Monte Subasio, near Spello and Assisi.
